PCS Celebrates National Mentoring Month

Pinellas County Schools’ students benefit everyday from community mentors who share their time, knowledge and experience to help them achieve their academic goals. As the district celebrates January’s National Mentoring Month, one such example of mentoring success comes from a story at Pinellas Park Middle School.

Pinellas Park Fire Chief, Doug Lewis, takes time out of his busy day to mentor Thomas, a student at Pinellas Park Middle. Thomas wants to become a pharmacist. Chief Lewis has been assisting Thomas with his high school options to help him prepare for his future career. Working as a team, they first researched the pharmacist program at USF to see what the prerequisites were and talked about what Thomas needed to do now to prepare for his career as a pharmacist. They are looking at the magnet programs and career academy programs that the district has to offer to help Thomas prepare for the rigorous college courses.

In order to help Chief Lewis learn how to become a successful mentor to Thomas, he first attended a PCS Mentor Strategies Workshop where he learned effective listening skills, goal setting, communication skills, relationship building, and mentoring policies & procedures.

The district has several Mentor Strategies Workshops coming up this month:
