Technology at Belcher

Technology use is highly encouraged at Belcher
Elementary. Each general education classroom is
equipped with 5 computers. These 5 computers
include 4 student stations and 1 teacher station
that is used for daily attendance, grade
keeping, communication, and various other tasks.
The teacher station is not limited to just
teacher use, the students also use this computer
in some classrooms when it is available. Each
teacher station is connected to the TV in each
room to allow the teacher to show PowerPoint
presentations to the whole class, show the
students new websites or programs and teach them
how to use them, and even show educational
videos that can be found on various educational
websites. Each classroom is also equipped with a
network printer.
Belcher Elementary is also equipped with 2
mobile labs, each containing 20 laptop computers
- one provided by Title I and one by District Referendum
Funds. Both labs visit classrooms
everyday and give all students a chance to
learn about laptops, how to use them, how they
differ from desktop computers, and how to be
careful with them. Each lab has enough headphones for each laptop, has a wireless access point for
internet access, and has a network printer on top for
students to print their work. In addition to these things
the Referendum Lab came with a Digital Projector for use
with the lab. Currently the Referendum Lab is being used by
students receiving instruction from the Title 1 Teaching
Partners in the Media Center. The Media Center also has a
small stationary 7 computer lab for research and small group
work like Belcher's Lunch Bunch.

Belcher Elementary's morning news show, Belcher Bobcat News
(BBN), is broadcast live from the Library Media Center each
morning over the closed circuit TV system. For many years
this was done at the checkout counter with one camera and
one mic, students would walk up to the counter to talk then
walk off to be replaced by other students. During the
2006-2007 school year Belcher received a real studio.
Now the morning news show is done with an anchor desk,
two cameras, a digital mixer for switching between
cameras, a computer for showing PowerPoint presentations
and videos, and monitors that allow the crew to see what
is being broadcast. We are also in the process of
upgrading the cameras, the microphones, and the computer
to new ones thanks to Title1 funds. While it has become
a much more complex operation to put on the program the
new ways of doing everything and the new additions to
the show have made it that much more impressive than
before. "Spotlights" throughout the show include grade
level news reporters, Bobcat birthdays, Books for
Bobcats, Spirit Day, pet profiles, Upcoming Belcher
events, and even the Tooth Fairy makes an appearance
during the show. Fifth grade students run the show and
their technical expertise is awesome! Students from all
grade levels are given the opportunity to appear on the
show throughout the year. |
